Our methodology

How we rank products

Every recommendation on this site follows the same evaluation process. No exceptions, no shortcuts, no pay-for-placement. Here is exactly how it works.

Why methodology matters

The pet supplement industry is growing fast, and not every product on the market deserves your money or your pet's trust. Many review sites operate on a simple model: the brand with the highest affiliate commission gets the top spot. We think that model is broken, and it puts pets at risk.

Our methodology exists to create a transparent, repeatable process for evaluating calming products. It protects our readers. It holds brands accountable. And it forces us to back up every recommendation with evidence, not just enthusiasm.

Our five evaluation criteria

1. Ingredient transparency

This is non-negotiable. Every product we consider must publish its complete ingredient list, including active and inactive ingredients with specific quantities. We do not accept proprietary blends where individual ingredient amounts are hidden behind a blend name. If a brand will not tell you exactly what is in the product and how much of each ingredient is included, we will not recommend it.

We cross-reference each ingredient against published veterinary research to verify that it has documented calming properties and is safe for the target species at the stated dosage. Ingredients without peer-reviewed support for their calming claims are flagged, and if a product relies primarily on unsubstantiated ingredients, it does not make our list.

2. Third-party lab testing

Any product containing CBD or hemp-derived compounds must provide current certificates of analysis (COAs) from an independent, ISO-accredited laboratory. We verify these COAs ourselves — checking that they match the product's batch number, that potency results align with label claims within a 10% margin, and that the product passes screening for:

  • Heavy metals (lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium)
  • Pesticide residues
  • Residual solvents from extraction
  • Microbial contamination
  • THC content (must be below 0.3% for hemp-derived products)

For non-CBD calming products, we still look for evidence of third-party testing, though we recognize that the testing infrastructure for herbal supplements is less standardized. Brands that voluntarily submit to independent testing earn additional credibility in our ranking.

3. Veterinary alignment

We consult published veterinary literature and, when appropriate, seek input from licensed veterinarians to assess whether a product's formulation and dosing recommendations align with current best practices. This is not the same as requiring a veterinary endorsement — those can be purchased. Instead, we look at whether the product's approach is consistent with what veterinary science currently supports.

Products that make unsupported medical claims — such as "cures anxiety" or "replaces medication" — are automatically disqualified. Natural calming products can be genuinely helpful, but they are supplements, not pharmaceuticals, and we expect brands to communicate this honestly.

4. Manufacturing standards

We assess the manufacturing environment for each product. Ideally, products should be manufactured in facilities that follow current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) or have equivalent quality certifications. We also consider:

  • Where raw ingredients are sourced (domestic vs. imported, organic certifications)
  • Extraction methods for CBD products (CO2 extraction preferred over solvent-based methods)
  • Quality control procedures during production
  • Shelf life and storage recommendations

Brands that are opaque about their manufacturing process receive lower confidence scores. Brands that are forthcoming about their supply chain earn higher marks.

5. Real-world effectiveness

Lab testing and ingredient research tell you whether a product should work. Real-world testing tells you whether it actually does. Our effectiveness evaluation has two components:

Community evidence: We analyze verified customer reviews across multiple platforms — not just the brand's own website. We look for patterns in reported outcomes, noting both positive results and common complaints. We discount reviews that appear inauthentic or incentivized.

First-hand testing: Whenever possible, we test products with our own animals over a minimum two-week period. We document behavior changes, onset time, any adverse reactions, and our overall assessment of value relative to price. These first-hand observations inform our editorial take on each product.

How we score

Each product receives a score across these five criteria. The final ranking is a weighted composite:

  • Ingredient transparency — 25%
  • Third-party lab testing — 25%
  • Veterinary alignment — 20%
  • Manufacturing standards — 15%
  • Real-world effectiveness — 15%

We weight safety and transparency factors more heavily than effectiveness because a product that is effective but poorly tested or opaque about its ingredients represents a risk we are not willing to recommend.

What disqualifies a product

A product is automatically excluded from our site if any of the following are true:

  1. No published ingredient list — If we cannot see exactly what is in the product, we will not review it.
  2. No third-party testing for CBD products — Lab testing is the minimum standard for any product containing cannabinoids.
  3. Unsupported medical claims — Products marketed as cures, treatments, or replacements for veterinary care are excluded.
  4. Artificial additives — Products containing artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives that serve no functional purpose are excluded.
  5. THC above legal limits — Any hemp-derived product with THC content above 0.3% is excluded.
  6. History of recalls or safety issues — Products or brands with documented safety incidents are excluded unless the issue has been fully resolved and publicly addressed.
  7. Refusal to provide information — If a brand declines to answer basic questions about sourcing, manufacturing, or testing, we consider that a disqualifying signal.

Affiliate disclosure

Let us be direct about this: Snout & Soothe earns revenue through affiliate partnerships. When you click certain product links on our site and make a purchase, we may receive a commission from the retailer or brand. This commission comes at no additional cost to you — the price you pay is the same whether you use our link or go directly to the brand's website.

Here is what matters: affiliate commissions never influence our rankings or recommendations. Our evaluation process is completed before we even check whether a product has an affiliate program. Products that score well in our evaluation get recommended. Products that do not score well are excluded — regardless of their commission rate.

We have turned down affiliate partnerships with products that did not meet our standards, including several with commission rates significantly higher than our current partners. We would rather earn less and maintain your trust than earn more and lose it.

All affiliate links on the site are marked with rel="nofollow noopener sponsored" attributes, per search engine guidelines and FTC disclosure requirements.

How we handle conflicts of interest

If a situation arises where our editorial judgment could be perceived as conflicted — for example, if a brand we have an affiliate relationship with reformulates a product in a way we find concerning — we will always prioritize our readers. We will update our content, adjust our recommendation, and note the change publicly. If a product no longer meets our standards, it comes off the site, regardless of any existing affiliate arrangement.

Questions about our process?

We welcome scrutiny. If you have questions about how we evaluated a specific product, or if you believe we have overlooked something in our methodology, please reach out at hello@snoutandsoothe.com. We are always looking for ways to improve our process, and reader feedback is one of the most valuable inputs we have.
